Mind the Price Tag

How do you know when to splurge on an item? How do you know when it is time to be a little bit frugal and save your coins? How do you determine whether the garment is worth the price tag that is attached to it? And how do you determine that the item you are about to spend real monies on, is an actual investment which will last you the years to come? These may be the legitimate questions you ask yourself when you are contemplating a purchase, especially if you stepped into a store that is notorious for expensive clothing. And what of the stores that stock lower grade, quality clothes and dare to slap on a high price tag. Some people may be careless in their approach on how they spend money on clothes, whereas other people may be overly cautious in how much they spend. Rightfully so, when the Dollar to Rand exchange rate keeps dancing up and down to the tune of ‘Ain’t no mountain high enough, ain’t no valley low enough’! But isn’t it also important to purchase clothes that will last you a good amount of time, which in the long run, saves you money? Well, the answers to these questions are definitely subjective, but we do share common ground on the value placed on clothes.

We all remember when Macklemore and Ryan Lewis released their song ‘Thrift Shop’ in 2012 which was played by almost everyone. And my favourite lines in the song was “I’ll wear your grandad’s clothes, I look incredible, I’m in this big-ass coat, From that thrift shop down the road.” Well Macklemore was onto something! You may not be a fan of thrift shopping but the idea of getting good clothes at a bargain is definitely a shout. Unfortunately, we live in a world where you will not always get quality clothes at a bargain, and you would be required to spend a little more coins on those pricier items. My general rule of thumb is that I am willing to fork out a bit more cash for the garments that will last at least five years. More often, such items are winter clothes like heavier jackets and blazers. I would then spend less money on clothes which I can get in abundance and may not necessarily last a long time, such as T-shirts and cardigans. I managed to bag this black jersey (or sweater as many may call it) in town for only R10 whereas the blue coat I have on top, was way more pricier from Exact. And the funny thing is, that black jersey is of good quality and is worth more than the price tag that was attached to it.

Not forgetting that when you walk down the street, we do not see your price tag. We only see how you wear your clothes. So, I say all this to say that you should definitely pay attention to the price tags attached to clothes and actively work toward getting more value for your money. Be it getting a few expensive clothes that will last long, having a wardrobe full of inexpensive clothes, or creating a balance between the two. Wearing expensive clothes does not always equate to looking good!

My favourite season for style and fashion has finally arrived, and this is my style recreation of an inspiration seen on Pinterest...and ofcourse, with a contrasting price tag!

I love the idea of thrift shopping and I have purchased a few items from thrift shops I found on Instagram myself. But these days you find that those thrift shops have become super expensive they exceed the commercial retails. I don't enjoy splurging at all, it hurts me deep inside to splurge on clothes, I have to convince myself and then comfort myself afterwards if I have to splurge. I know mentally that clothes are necessary but they are not my immediate thought when it comes to purchasing stuff. It's crazy cause when it comes to buying food I do not have to think of it that much, I will be hurt by the price but in my head,…

Definitely! And the thing is, clothes is not a priority for everyone. For a lot of people, the only thing they are concerned about is making sure they are dressed. They are not really concerned with splurging. And I have also noticed that people are taking advantage of consumers who appreciate thrift shopping. They are bumping up their prices because more people are turning towards thrift shops to acquire unique garments. But the whole premise of thrift shops is make available clothes that are still in condition, at a discounted price, instead of throwing them away. It is a livelihood to many and the only way for others to afford clothes. And to others, it's a way to acquire 'old…

So true! Thrifted items really help with sustainability and keeping clothes that can still be worn out of landfills! And when you know how to pair it with store bought clothes, you can look as though everything was bought from a boutique 🙌🏾💯
