Time Gone By

Cargo Pants are a timeless piece of clothing with its’ origin in military attire. Designed for men and women in combat, Cargo Pants were essential for military forces during World War II- and with the end of global conflict, Cargo Pants were assimilated into construction and outdoor attire. Not long afterwards, Cargo Pants transitioned into everyday fashion as a representation of ‘urban culture’. In the late 90’s and early 2000’s, the pants were at its’ peak popularity with musicians and actors donning the pants at red carpet events and music videos. Cargo Pants were versatile in design- ranging from low rise to high rise, denim to joggers, skinny-fit to loose-fit, and in every colour possible- styled with crop tops and metallic accessories. The new trend reflected the excitement for the turn of the millennium. So, considering the online generation wars, it would be remiss of me to not stick it to Gen Z and Alpha and remind them that Gen X and Millennials are to thank for their beloved Cargo Pants.

Fast forward to now, women are influenced by the Aaliyah inspired look of styling the Cargo Pants with a bandana converted top and colour tinted sunglasses for the timeless 90’s outfit. On the other hand, women have also styled Cargo Pants with T-Shirts or formal shirts for a classy casual look. Either way, the girlies are having fun with the garment with no sign of stopping. So, what exactly is the fascination with these pants?

Well, when you remove jeans from the equation, women’s pants are rarely made with sufficient pockets and if ever there are pockets, they are shallow. Not to mention the comfort and youthful allure that attracts anyone to purchasing a pair for themselves. But in my opinion, the ultimate selling point is the functionality of the pants. On the days when women prefer to carry a small bag or a cross-body pouch, Cargo Pants are very useful in the safe keeping of keys, money, lip gloss or any items necessary for the day. And it is no wonder that women of all ages are styling out with the Cargo Pants. This week, I paired my Cargo Joggers with a waist-length crop top with crochet trimmings and White Sneakers.
