Did someone say Ankara!

We are nearing the end of summer and we survived January, a month long heat wave that nearly finished us all! I am fortunate to be working from home where I can throw on a vest and push through the day. But on the day's I need to step out to run errands, go to church, spend time with a friend or get the weekly shopping done, an outfit that will serve me in this heat is absolutely necessary. And yes, I am talking about Ankara!

The modern African print skirt which we have all grown to love is specifically tailored to flare out from the waist. And if you have had the pleasure of owning one, you know fully well how comfortable and stylish these skirts can be. Depending on your taste, you can opt for light coloured materials with simple designs, or brighter patterns that grab attention from a mile away. And the best part about wearing a garment made from African materials is that not much is needed to make it look good. Just throw on a pair of plain white sneakers and a white crop top and you are good to go! Not to mention, you are almost guaranteed not to wear the same outfit as someone else when you are walking in the middle of town.

Looking good in our African prints does come at a cost. From selecting the number of metre's of your material, to the type of print you prefer, and the tailor sewing the garment to your specifications, you can easily spend over R 500 on one item. So, when it's time to rock Ankara, you want the garment to be the centre of attention in your

outfit. The best part of owning these maxi skirts, is that you can still wear them in Autumn, by pairing it with a long sleeve or a polar neck. Another option is that you can wear a top and pair it with a leather jacket, giving the outfit the extra edge.

So...if summer has gotten away from you, don't let the upcoming season pass you by without tapping into your trad wardrobe!

I love African prints but have a hard time differentiating between Ankara, Kente, Khanga or any African fabric. Any pointers to how I can tell the difference based on patterns or colours?

I know that different regions have certain styles and type of material which may look similar. Kente is from Ghana and Khanga may be from Eastern Africa spreading to Southern Africa. But you are right, differentiating between them can become difficult. I will definitely keep this in mind and focus on that on another post. Thank you for this 🙌🏾.
