Once again, I start this off by telling you how I admired a garment on Pinterest for the longest of time, before buying it. This time around, when I bought the first garment, I realised that it was tailor-made for me. So, I went on to get two more similar garments to add to my wardrobe, and I aint look back ever since! This is how I got into Bodycon dresses.
According to Uncle Google, Bodycon is short for ‘body conscious’ or ‘body confidence’ and is a style of dress that is figure-hugging. And it is no secret that the Bodycon dress is worn to show-off one’s figure or curves. In the early 2000’s, the Bodycon dress was popularly known as the Bandage dress and has kinda evolved into the Bodycon dress ever since. And like many women, I was not about to wear a dress that publicly announces that I have a tummy or shows off “Miss Fupa”. But again, on one of my window-shopping trips in town, I saw a knitted bodycon dress and tried it on. I had previously seen many women wearing bodycon dresses that appeared to be too tight, which put me off the dress all-together. But when I tried on the dress, I was surprised by how comfortable it was. I did not need to excessively hold in my tummy and the dress comfortably lined my body as though a material was laid on me. I was seriously surprised at how good it looked. After realising that I could wear this to church and to work, I bought the dress and fitted it again immediately when I got home, to make sure I had not made a mistake of getting the wrong size. After wearing the dress a couple of times, I found that I enjoyed it. However, due to the length of the dress, ending just above my knees, I still desired another one that ended near my ankles. After a few months of patience and browsing through stores, I found two more bodycon dresses with one being the perfect length, pictured below.

Bodycon dresses can be easily worn by smaller-figured women, but I feel that they look just as good on fuller figure women too. However, the way you wear it can make or break your experience. I have found that bodycon dresses that are knitted fit better on women with curves. Moreover, you are more likely to find a wider variety of sizes with the knitted dresses, that will make you feel and look comfortable. The downside of the knitted bodycon is that they tend to be more expensive and readily available in Autumn and Winter. On the other hand, the bodycon dresses made with the lighter, figure-hugging material are readily found in many stores and tend to be less expensive. However, finding a size which sits well on your body can be a challenge as I have left many bodycon dresses because they were too small, or too tight. And when you do find the correct size, I have found that wearing the lighter, figure-hugging material in a darker colour seems to be more appealing than the lighter colours, which may not be the case with the knitted bodycon. In any case, I suggest that you try the dress on and ensure that you are comfortable with how it looks. This way, your confidence shows through when adorning the dress.

And if you are not totally comfortable in a bodycon dress, make use of tights or the right size shape wear which make the outfit look seamless and more put together. Perhaps experiment with the knitted bodycon which is much thicker in material and less likely to make you feel uncomfortable. You can also throw on a jacket or a cardigan if you still need time to get used to modelling off your mid or tummy area. Always wear something you feel comfortable in over trying to impress people in these streets!

I don't know if I will ever get to a place where I am comfortable enough to wear a bodycon dress, I do not like clothes that hug my body. But who knows I might find myself fitting one on one day and feel comfortable like you did. . .
